Malvin Walton Rapson enlisted in the Navy in 1948 at the age of 17.  He was stationed in San Diego and was trained as a Sonar Technician, trained to identify enemy ships and submarines.  He was deployed on the Alfred A. Cunningham (DD-752) in 1950 and joined the Pacific Fleet as part of the Korean War.  The Cunningham served as an Anti-submarine warfare (ASW). On April 21st of 1952, it attacked and sank an enemy submarine.  Later in 1952, he ended his naval career and he was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer 3rd Class.
