Richard Loren Nowry was serving his country during the Vietnam War when he gave his all in the line of duty. Richard had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, via Regular Military. He began his tour on 8 November 1966. His military occupation or specialty was Motor Vehicle Operator. He was attached to the 1st Marine Division, 1st Mountain Battalion, B Company, United States Marine Corps.
During his service in the Vietnam War, Marine Corps Corporal Nowry experienced a traumatic event which ultimately resulted in loss of life on 9 June 1968. Recorded circumstances attributed to: Died through hostile action .. explosive device. Incident location: South Vietnam, Quang Tri province.
For his service and sacrifice, Richard Nowry was awarded The Purple Heart, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation.
Richard Loren Nowry was born on 25 January 1947. He was the son of Kenneth G. and Merry C. Nowry of Plymouth. Richard’s father, Kenneth, was a decorated Disabled American Veteran of World War 2, having received The Purple Heart and the two oakleaf clusters for wounds he suffered in action in the infantry shortly after the invasion of Normandy. In 1974, when he was honored as “Veteran of the Year” by the Disabled War Veterans Association, it was noted that “…Ken doesn’t speak much of his war record. Rather, he talks of Richard, his oldest son, who became a casualty while serving with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam in 1968.”
In addition to his parents, Richard Nowry was survived by three younger brothers: Ronald, Kenneth and Michael.
Richard Loren Nowry is interred in the Lowry family plot in the Livonia Center Cemetery in Livonia, Michigan. Richard is remembered on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. Name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 582, Line 12.
