Upon graduation from Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers on June 16, 1984. He attended and graduated from the US Army Engineer Officer Basic Course at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, on January 25, 1985.
Posted to the 11th Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy), at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, he was assigned as the 2nd Platoon Leader in Bravo Company. During his time in Bravo Company, the company deployed to the Palmerola Air Based in Honduras to construct two maintenance hangers and associated taxi areas in support of Army Aviation assets operating in Central America. After being promoted to First Lieutenant, he became the Executive Officer of Alpha Company, 11th Engineer Battalion.
After graduating from the US Army Engineer Officer Advanced Course at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia in September 1988, he was posted to the 78th Engineer Battalion (Combat), at Rhineland Kaserne, in Ettlingen, West Germany. Upon arrival, he was assigned as the Logistics Officer for the 78th Engineer Battalion. After promotion to Captain, he became the Company Commander of Bravo Company. His company was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, First Armored Division as their Engineer Company for all wartime preparations and training.
Upon completion of his NATO tour with the US Army in Europe, he was sent to the Command and General Staff College where he graduated from the Combined Armed Services Staff School on May 21, 1991, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
For his third active-duty tour, he was posted to the ROTC Battalion at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in July 1991. He served as the battalion’s operations officer and primary instructor for third year advanced ROTC students to prepare them for their leadership evaluation at Fr. Bragg, North Carolina that next summer each year. After completion of this tour and his MBA Degree from Drexel University, he separated from active duty and was assigned to the Individual Ready Reserve on March 31, 1995. On May 22, 1995, he was promoted to Major.
After the attacks on September 11, 2001, he was recalled to active duty on December 2, 2001. After a short time at Fr. Benning, Georga, he was posted to Wiesbaden, Germany, with the 221st Forward Support Battalion, First Armored Division. He then served as the senior Engineer officer until he was released from active duty in August 2002 and returned to Michigan.
Tim’s awards include: Meritorious Service Medal (1st oak leaf cluster – 2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (1st oak leaf cluster – 2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal (with bronze star device – 2nd Award), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd award), and Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with rifle bar & pistol bar.
